Davante Adams’ move to injured reserve leaves the Rams with a straightforward roster question and a less straightforward football one: if they are not looking outside the building for help, who fills the space he leaves behind?

Sean McVay said the Rams have not explored adding a wide receiver externally after Adams’ hamstring injury, and the team’s public posture has been consistent with that approach. The message is next-man-up. The execution now has to match it.

Adams is slated to miss 6-10 weeks with a ruptured semitendinosus, and McVay said the injury will require a “cleanup” procedure. That timeline removes one of the Rams’ top receiving options for a stretch that will include multiple games, not just a one-week adjustment.

The Rams’ current receiver group is already on the board: Konata Mumpfield, Jordan Whittington, Tutu Atwell, Alex Bachman and C.J. Daniels Jr. are on the 53-man roster, with Brennan Presley on the practice squad. McVay said the team has “some depth on our roster,” and indicated the Rams may look to the practice squad before considering anything external.

Matthew Stafford framed the situation in the same internal terms, saying that with Adams out, “everyone will get more opportunities,” while also pointing to Mumpfield’s potential. That leaves the Rams with a familiar kind of test: whether opportunity can be turned into production quickly enough to keep the offense on schedule without a player who had been part of the receiving core’s top end.

The timing adds another layer. The Rams are preparing for their Week 7 matchup with the Raiders while leaning into a next-man-up mentality, but that phrase now has to become more than a slogan. It has to show up in the route distribution, the game plan and the way the offense absorbs a major loss without a corresponding outside addition.

Adams was not the only Ram moved to injured reserve. The team also placed nose tackle Poona Ford on IR because of a ruptured triceps injury, another hit to the roster as the Rams try to manage the week with internal options.

The other move on the transaction wire was different in kind but still part of the same roster reshaping: the Rams signed kicker Brandon McManus. For a team trying to stabilize one side of the roster while absorbing losses on another, the sequence underscored how much of this week’s work is about rearranging what is already in the building.
