The Monday night matchup between the Commanders and 49ers began with questions about who would actually be available at receiver. By halftime, those questions had turned into a much bigger problem for both teams.
Washington’s Terry McLaurin was carted to the locker room after an apparent knee injury and was quickly ruled out. San Francisco’s Mike Evans, who had been listed as questionable before kickoff, played through the opening half before leaving with an Achilles injury and being ruled out for the rest of the game.
That left both offenses trying to function without one of their top pass-catchers. It also made the pregame injury report feel less like background noise and more like the central plot of the night.
McLaurin’s exit came in the first quarter, when he went down while running a route and needed help getting off the field. Washington was already trailing 14-3 at the time, and the loss of its top target only made the margin for error smaller. McLaurin was officially ruled out almost immediately after being carted off.
For the Commanders, the timing was especially harsh because Stefon Diggs was active despite his own hamstring issue. Diggs had not practiced at the start of the week on Thursday, then returned in a limited capacity on Friday and Saturday. He entered the game leading Washington with 31 targets, 18 receptions and three receiving touchdowns, and he had 170 receiving yards — second only to McLaurin’s 203.
That made McLaurin’s injury more than just a single-play setback. With him gone, Washington’s passing game had to lean even harder on Diggs, who had already been managing his own availability concerns. The Commanders had also been without Diggs in the previous week’s tie against New York, which only added to the uncertainty around how much of the passing game would be intact on Monday night.
San Francisco’s receiver situation was shaky before the game even started. The 49ers were already without Deebo Samuel Jr., who was ruled out with a hamstring injury, and Christian Kirk, who was sidelined with a calf injury. Evans was then listed as questionable heading into the primetime contest before ultimately taking the field.
He made an impact while he was out there, catching three passes for 94 yards before leaving late in the first half. Evans suffered a leg injury, walked to the locker room for treatment and was later listed as questionable to return with an Achilles injury before being ruled out.
By halftime, the 49ers had built a 20-3 lead, and the game had become a test of depth as much as execution. Both teams had entered the night with receiver questions. Both had those questions answered in the worst possible way.
