Seattle has a chance to keep pace in the NFC race, but the timing is awkward: the Seahawks are 3-3, the Rams have stumbled to 2-4, and the Week 7 injury report is threatening to make the immediate task much harder than the standings suggest.

That’s the tension around Seattle’s matchup with Kansas City. On one hand, the Seahawks have been handed a little breathing room in the division picture. On the other, their own roster availability is still shaping the conversation, and the biggest question in the backfield has already been answered for this week.

Zach Charbonnet will not play in Week 7.

Head coach Mike Macdonald ruled him out again on Friday, extending the wait for a running back Seattle has missed in exactly the areas where the offense has needed help most. Charbonnet’s absence has been especially frustrating because the Seahawks have struggled to run the ball, and his short-yardage work and red-zone production have been part of what they’ve lacked.

The injury itself has lingered since last season’s playoffs, when a knee issue forced him to miss time well into this year. There is optimism that the problem is not a long-term one, but that does not change the reality for Sunday: Seattle will have to face Kansas City without him.

That matters because Charbonnet is expected to be the alpha of the Seahawks’ running back group when fully healthy. The team has not yet gotten that version of him this season, and it remains unclear whether he can carry a large load of the rushing attack once he returns. One report suggested he could be eased back in with around 10 touches instead of 20, which would be a far cry from a full workload.

Seattle may need that kind of help sooner rather than later. The Seahawks have dropped three of their last four games, and the margin for error is shrinking even as the NFC landscape gives them an opening. A separate report framed the Rams’ recent slide as an unexpected gift for Seattle in the race, but gifts only matter if a team can take advantage of them.

The injury report around the Chiefs game adds another layer to that problem. Drake Thomas and Chazz Surratt will not play, and Nick Emmanwori is questionable with a hip issue. At the same time, right guard Anthony Bradford is expected to return after missing the last five games with a knee injury, which should help the run game in front of whoever is carrying the ball.

That combination leaves Seattle in a familiar spot: some help is arriving, some help is missing, and the timing is not ideal. The Seahawks may be getting a break in the standings, but Week 7 is still going to be defined by who is actually available when they line up against Kansas City.
