Paulson Adebo is back on the practice field. Tremaine Edmunds is headed to injured reserve.
Those two moves landed on the same day, and they frame the Giants’ Week 7 defense in opposite directions as they prepare for the Texans: one cornerback returning from IR, one linebacker leaving the active roster entirely.
Adebo was designated for return from injured reserve and practiced Wednesday, giving the Giants a chance to get him back into the mix before Sunday’s matchup with Houston. The timing matters because the Giants have spent much of the season managing availability across the defense, and this week is no different.
Edmunds’ move is the sharper blow. He was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 24 and is ruled out, removing a linebacker the Giants had been counting on as they try to steady a defense that has already been forced through a series of injury-related adjustments.
The contrast is what makes the roster move so notable. Adebo’s activation adds a body to the secondary. Edmunds’ IR placement takes one away from the middle of the defense. The Giants are not simply getting healthier; they are shifting the problem from one spot to another.
That leaves the question hanging over the matchup with Houston: can the Giants absorb Edmunds’ absence with Adebo’s return, or does the move just redistribute the same availability issue?
The Texans come in at 2-4, while the Giants are 3-2-1. That record gap does not change the fact that New York is still navigating a defense that has been hit repeatedly by injury news. In recent weeks, the Giants have already had to deal with players being ruled out or listed questionable on their injury reports, including Colton Hood, Theo Johnson and Tyler Nubin for Week 6, and earlier absences and question marks across the defense in previous matchups.
Against that backdrop, Adebo’s return is useful, but it is not a clean fix. He is coming back from injured reserve, and the Giants will have to fold him back into the defense while also adjusting for Edmunds’ loss. Those are two separate tasks, and they arrive together.
For a team heading into a Week 7 game with Houston, that is the reality of the roster right now: one defender coming back, another going down, and no way to treat those moves as independent.
