The Ravens are already digging into their wide receiver depth, and they haven’t even lined up for their second game of the season.
That’s the reality after rookie Ja'Kobi Lane was placed on injured reserve Wednesday because of a reported fractured wrist, a setback that traces back to the first half of Baltimore’s season opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Lane had been one of the more promising names in camp, and the injury removes him from the mix for at least the next four games.
There is still optimism about the recovery timeline. The Ravens have said Lane “definitely has a really good chance of coming back here pretty quick,” but for now the roster math is the immediate issue.
Baltimore is heading into Sunday’s home opener against the New Orleans Saints with another receiver question hanging over the week: Zay Flowers is dealing with a hamstring injury and is day to day. The Ravens want to be careful with their top weapon, who exploded for 150 yards in the first half of the opener, but his status leaves the group without much certainty at the top.
If Flowers can’t go, Rashod Bateman becomes the Ravens’ No. 1 wide receiver target. That would put a lot on a player who was held without a catch in the opener and is coming off a down season in which he finished with 19 catches for 224 yards.
Bateman is also part of a wider reshuffling. The Ravens’ own report points to other receivers being asked to absorb more responsibility, rather than one player simply replacing Lane’s snaps. That includes rookie Elijah Sarratt, who impressed in training camp with contested catches and yards after the catch, and LaJohntay Wester, who could see a larger role if Flowers is sidelined.
Devontez Walker is another piece of the puzzle. He missed the opener with a groin injury, but he said he is “way better now” and preparing for Sunday’s game against the Saints. Walker also said the team was “pretty bummed about it” when Lane went down, adding, “He brings so much light, so much juice to our room.”
Walker’s return matters because Baltimore has already been forced to account for multiple absences at once. Lane is out, Flowers is uncertain, and the Ravens are trying to avoid asking too much of any one receiver this early in the season.
That’s why the team also called up veteran Chris Moore from the practice squad after his impact in the previous game. Moore gives Baltimore another experienced option as it tries to piece together a workable rotation for a matchup that arrives before the roster has even settled.
For now, the question is less about replacing Lane individually than about whether the Ravens can spread the load well enough to keep the passing game functional. Bateman, Sarratt, Walker, Wester and Moore may all have to be part of that answer against the Saints.
