Puka Nacua was out. Davante Adams took over. Konata Mumpfield kept the Rams alive late. And still, by the end of Sunday night in Denver, Los Angeles was left with a 30-26 loss and a longer injury list than the one it brought in.
That is the tension facing the Rams heading into Week 4 at Philadelphia: they have already seen replacement production at receiver, but the roster questions are spreading beyond one missing star.
Against the Broncos, Adams led the Rams’ receivers with 137 yards on seven catches, doing most of his damage early and finishing with a team-leading 71 receiving yards in the first half. That was the most yards Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain has allowed in a half in coverage in his career.
With Nacua sidelined by a hip injury, Adams was the most consistent target in the offense and the one player Denver never really solved. He finished with seven receptions on 13 targets, giving the Rams a steady outlet while the rest of the game tightened around them.
Mumpfield added the kind of late-game production that can change how a depth chart looks for a week. He finished with four receptions, and three of them came in the fourth quarter. The biggest sequence came on three straight catches that totaled 78 yards, capped by a touchdown that briefly put the Rams ahead with 3:38 left.
That surge gave Los Angeles a chance to leave Denver with a win. Instead, the Rams fell 30-26 on Sunday Night Football, and the game ended with more concern than clarity.
The injury updates after the loss were as important as the box score. Jaylen Watson sustained a dislocated shoulder in the game and is likely to miss Week 4 against the Eagles. Terrance Ferguson is also likely out after suffering a medial ankle sprain. Ferguson first got hurt with 7:35 remaining in the first quarter, was initially questionable to return, and did come back before exiting for good after a nine-yard reception with 9:36 left in the second quarter.
Colby Parkinson’s update added another layer. McVay said Parkinson did not have any setbacks with his knee injury, but he did sustain an AC sprain during the game.
So while Adams and Mumpfield gave the Rams real production in Nacua’s absence, the broader picture is still unsettled. The offense found enough to stay in the game against Denver, but the next week brings another opponent, another road test, and more uncertainty around who will actually be available.
