Nick Bosa’s calf injury arrived at the worst possible time for a 49ers team that is already juggling injuries and roster limits. The All-Pro defensive end suffered the setback in practice ahead of Week 3 and is expected to miss several weeks, which immediately put San Francisco in a familiar but uncomfortable spot: protect a roster option now, or use the opening to push rookie Romello Height into a bigger role.

The 49ers are leaning toward not placing Bosa on injured reserve, largely because they are running out of IR spaces. San Francisco has already designated 15 players to injured reserve this season, and only eight players can return to the active roster from IR in any given season. That makes every designation matter, especially with Bosa expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks.

The timing also matters because Bosa is likely to miss both the Broncos and Seahawks games. If the absence stretches beyond four weeks, the situation becomes even more complicated for a defense that is already dealing with a long injury list.

That is where Height enters the picture.

The rookie has already played 62 defensive snaps through the first two games, and his only tackle this season came on a sack in the second quarter of the Week 2 win over the Miami Dolphins. That is not a full résumé, but it is enough to show why the 49ers may be willing to lean on him sooner than planned.

Kyle Shanahan said there is still a chance Height could be ready to go this weekend against the Arizona Cardinals. That leaves the 49ers with a second layer of uncertainty: even if Bosa stays off IR, they may still need Height available immediately.

Height’s own hand injury complicates that picture. He missed Thursday’s practice, and his status for Week 3 is also listed as questionable. So the rookie who could be asked to absorb more of Bosa’s workload is dealing with his own availability issue at the same time.

If Height does suit up against Arizona, the matchup could give him a chance to build on the early flashes he has already shown. His snap count is expected to rise significantly in the coming weeks with Bosa out, and the next stretch of games will show whether San Francisco is simply trying to survive the injury pileup or whether a rookie pass rusher is about to get a much larger stage.
