Josh Jacobs is set to come off the commissioner exempt list on Monday, and that changes the Packers’ Week 7 outlook in a very direct way: he can practice next week and is eligible to play against the Detroit Lions on October 25.

That does not close the book on his status. The NFL’s investigation remains ongoing, and additional discipline is still possible depending on the findings. But for now, the Packers and Lions have to prepare for a matchup in which Jacobs is no longer just a roster-status note — he is a real on-field variable.

For Green Bay, the timing matters. The Packers’ running game has been one of the league’s least productive units, with 3.1 yards per carry, which ranks 31st. Jacobs’ availability gives them a back who has already been central to their offense since signing as a free agent ahead of the 2024 season.

It also gives Detroit a familiar problem.

In six career games against the Lions, Jacobs has run for 491 yards and seven touchdowns. That production is part of why his possible return has already been folded into the Week 7 conversation on the Detroit side, where the matchup is being framed around more than just whether he is active.

“Of the Lions’ 12 remaining games, six of them are within the NFC North and a win over the Packers would be a step in the right direction, especially with the return of Josh Jacobs.”

The broader uncertainty is what keeps this from being a simple return story. Jacobs was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list on August 30, pleaded no contest on September 10 to charges of battery and criminal destruction of property, and was convicted of battery and fined $1,000. If the league eventually hands down a suspension, the six games he spent on the exempt list could count toward that punishment.

So the immediate question for Week 7 is not just whether Jacobs is available. It is how much his presence changes the preparation on both sidelines — and whether the Packers can use his return to address a running game that has struggled to move the ball consistently.
