The Giants are no longer just floating quarterback names. According to recent reports, they are making calls, a move could come as soon as Monday, and J.J. McCarthy has become one of the specific names attached to that search.
That distinction matters. There is a difference between a team surveying the market after an injury and a team getting close enough to a decision that one quarterback keeps surfacing in the conversation. CBS Sports reported that New York is making calls on quarterbacks and that a move may be imminent. Two separate reports then pushed McCarthy to the center of the discussion.
McCarthy’s name has popped up in NFL conversations since Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury. The Giants have been mulling over their options for adding another quarterback, and McCarthy is now being described as a real trade possibility rather than just a speculative fit.
He is also not a random name for New York to be linked to. The Giants previously did extensive work on McCarthy during the 2024 pre-draft process, which gives the reported interest a little more history than a typical emergency quarterback search. That background sits alongside the current need: the Giants are looking for help after Dart’s injury, and they want a quarterback who can make plays with his legs.
McCarthy fits that description on paper, which is part of why his name keeps coming up. He has also been mentioned in multiple trade rumors after losing the battle for the QB1 job to Kyler Murray. Minnesota’s McCarthy is being described as an intriguing option, which is why he is being treated as potentially available via trade.
The timing also adds pressure to the Giants’ search. Sources told CBS Sports that it is a matter of when, not if, New York makes a move for a quarterback. ESPN’s list of possibilities also includes free agent Jimmy Garoppolo, Cardinals backup Gardner Minshew II, and 49ers backup Mac Jones, so McCarthy is not the only name in play.
Still, he is the one that has drawn the clearest line between the Giants’ broad search and a more concrete possibility. That does not mean a deal is done. It does mean the conversation has moved beyond simply asking whether New York will add a quarterback at all.
The Giants also have limited draft capital to work with in 2027, with no fourth-round picks and two selections each in the fifth and sixth rounds. That matters because any trade pursuit has to fit within a thin set of resources, even as the team is expected to acquire another quarterback probably early this week.
For now, the story is not that McCarthy is a Giant. It is that the Giants’ quarterback search has reached the point where his name is attached to it in a meaningful way, and the next move may come quickly.
