The New York Giants’ latest quarterback move did not arrive as a neat, isolated transaction. It landed in the middle of a roster scramble, with Jaxson Dart out for the season with a knee injury, Jake Haener already on the move, and the team still weighing whether one addition is enough.

New York traded a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings for J.J. McCarthy, giving the Giants another arm in a room that changed quickly after Dart’s injury. Haener, who had just been promoted to the active roster, is now being waived. The Giants plan to bring him back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

That sequence matters because the McCarthy deal does not appear to be the end of the Giants’ quarterback search. FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer said New York would “like to add one, possibly two” quarterbacks, and Jake Browning remains on the radar as a possible flier. Browning has a 4-3 record in seven starts and was one of 11 players with double-digit touchdown passes (11).

At the same time, the Giants do not currently plan on adding another quarterback to the roster.

McCarthy arrives with a profile that is still very much in progress. He has made 10 career starts and is 6-4 as a starter, with 1,632 passing yards, a 57.6% completion rate, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also added 181 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 37 carries in 2025. At Michigan, he was 27-1 as a starter.

This season, McCarthy served as Minnesota’s No. 3 quarterback behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz. The Vikings’ decision to move him also ripples beyond New York: the trade closes another potential route for the Colts and Anthony Richardson. Richardson and McCarthy have been described as having the same kind of skill set, with good arm strength but accuracy that can come and go, which is part of why the market for one can affect the other.

For the Giants, the immediate picture is simple enough: Dart is out, Winston remains the starter for Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals, and Haener is the first roster casualty of the McCarthy move. But the broader picture is still shifting, and one quarterback trade has already altered plans in New York and Indianapolis at the same time.
