The Philadelphia Eagles will be without Jalen Hurts on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, but the immediate absence is only part of the story. The more important issue is how much the team will say next about his availability beyond Week 6.
Hurts has been ruled out because of a superficial blood clot in his calf, according to the Eagles’ statement. The team said he will miss the Panthers game while it determines the appropriate course of treatment.
The injury traces back to the Eagles’ Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, when Hurts was cleated. He later visited the training room on Oct. 8 seeking treatment for his calf. An ultrasound then revealed the blood clot.
A follow-up ultrasound showed movement in the small clot, which led to Hurts being ruled out for Sunday. Doctors also recommended another follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia.
That leaves the Eagles with a clear short-term answer and an unresolved longer one. Tanner McKee is expected to start against Carolina, with Cole Payton behind him, but the team has not yet provided a fuller timeline for Hurts’ return.
The Eagles’ own statement is the most important communication so far, and it was careful to stop at Sunday’s game. “Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers as we determine the appropriate course of treatment,” the team said. It also said the health and safety of Hurts are the Eagles’ highest priority.
Hurts’ status had already become a moving target before this week. He did not appear on the injury report until the Friday before the Eagles’ Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, even though the calf issue dated back to the Rams game. That sequence makes the next update from the team especially significant, because it will be the first real indication of whether this is a one-game absence or something more.
Through five games, Hurts has completed 57.8% of his passes for 933 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions. With the Eagles sitting at 2-3, his absence changes the offense immediately — but the larger uncertainty is how long they will have to manage without him.
For now, the Panthers game is the confirmed part. What the Eagles say after that will matter even more.
