Jalen Hurts’ injury has pushed the Eagles into a two-part quarterback response: Tanner McKee is set to start, and Joe Milton is expected to arrive from the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad.

Hurts has been ruled out for Week 6 against the Carolina Panthers with a blood clot stemming from his calf injury, leaving Philadelphia to sort out both the immediate starter and the next layer of depth behind him. McKee is the first answer. Milton is the insurance policy the Eagles did not want to leave to a rookie alone.

That matters because the Eagles were not comfortable with only having a rookie behind McKee. With Hurts unavailable and McKee moving into the starting role, Philadelphia is adding another quarterback rather than trying to ride out the week with a thin room.

The move also comes with a built-in wrinkle: Milton is being poached from the Cowboys’ practice squad, which gives him a chance to face the team that had him in the building. It is a rare cross-rival transaction, but for Philadelphia the more immediate issue is practical. The Eagles need a quarterback room that can survive the week, not just a headline.

McKee’s start will be his third career start, and his first that did not come in a Week 18 game. That makes this more than a temporary placeholder situation. Philadelphia is handing the offense to a quarterback who has not yet had to carry it in a regular-season game with this kind of context around him.

The Eagles will also be leaning on the players around him. Darius Cooper leads the team with four touchdown catches, and he has caught seven of his 13 targets for 130 yards and those four scores in five games. McKee and Cooper have spent more time together in the last two preseasons than Cooper has with Hurts, which gives Philadelphia at least one established connection as it tries to keep the passing game moving.

Milton’s profile is different. He has played in five career games, completing 69.8% of his passes for 424 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He has also rushed for 66 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown. That limited sample is part of why his arrival reads as depth first, but it also gives the Eagles another option if the quarterback situation shifts again.

For now, the structure is clear: McKee starts, Milton joins the room, and Philadelphia waits to see whether Hurts’ absence is a one-week problem or the start of a longer stretch that forces the Eagles to keep adjusting.
