Jalon Daniels did not just help Tampa Bay get off the mat. He turned the Buccaneers’ first win of the season into a night that looked, at least for a few hours, like the start of something larger than a one-off upset.
The undrafted rookie quarterback, making his second straight start while Baker Mayfield recovers from a dislocated right thumb, finished 19 of 25 for 189 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. He added 23 rushing yards, posted a 110.2 passer rating, and guided Tampa Bay to a 24-16 win over Dallas that moved the Buccaneers from 0-4 to 1-4.
Daniels said the victory “means everything” to him and reflected on his journey.
That was the backdrop to a game that changed shape in a hurry. Tampa Bay scored on its first three drives of the second half, and the offense that had been searching for a breakthrough suddenly looked in rhythm. The Buccaneers ran for 241 yards overall, with Bucky Irving carrying 21 times for 165 yards and a touchdown.
Daniels was efficient from the start. On Tampa Bay’s first possession, the Cowboys showed pressure on third-and-4, and Daniels answered with a 6-yard completion to Emeka Egbuka before finding Irving in the flat for a 5-yard touchdown. Later, he went 8-for-8 and hit Irving again for a 5-yard score in the second quarter to tie the game at 7.
The rookie also showed a deeper layer to his game. He connected with Tez Johnson on a 64-yard pass, one of the throws that pushed Tampa Bay into Dallas territory and helped the Buccaneers keep control as the game opened up. Daniels also converted a third-and-21 midway through the third quarter with Tampa Bay leading 21-10, a snap that fit the night’s larger theme: the Buccaneers kept finding answers when the down-and-distance got uncomfortable.
That mattered because the game was still tight before Tampa Bay’s second-half surge. The Buccaneers opened the second half with a touchdown on a two-play, 86-yard drive, then kept stacking scoring possessions. By the time Dallas tried to rally, Tampa Bay’s defense had already done enough to keep the Cowboys from matching their usual output, holding them 14 points below their per-game average.
The finish was as clean as the middle of the game was chaotic. Inside linebacker Alex Anzalone intercepted Dak Prescott with 1:22 left to preserve the win, and the Buccaneers ran out the clock from there.
For Daniels, the night also carried a place in the record book. He became the first rookie quarterback to start in the 2026 season, and the fourth undrafted rookie to win a primetime game since 2000. He was also the second to do it on the road.
That is a narrow slice of history, but it fits the way the night unfolded: a win that began as Tampa Bay’s first of the season and ended with an undrafted rookie quarterback standing at the center of it.
