Kyler Murray’s exit in the first quarter against Green Bay was supposed to be the story. Carson Wentz made sure it wasn’t the only one.

Minnesota had already listed Wentz as its QB2 behind Murray for the Week 1 matchup, so the Vikings were prepared for him to be one snap away from the job. Still, the way the game changed after Murray took a hard hit late in the first quarter — sliding to finish a scramble, then leaving with a concussion and being ruled out — pushed Wentz into a much bigger spotlight than a routine backup appearance.

What followed was immediate and unusually clean. Wentz led the Vikings to four touchdowns on four straight drives, and Minnesota beat the Packers 39-22 on Sept. 13, 2026. The four consecutive touchdowns tied for the most by a team in a game since at least 2000.

Wentz finished 12 of 19 for 133 yards, three touchdowns and a 123.5 passer rating. He also helped Minnesota navigate a game that, by the numbers, was messier than the final score suggested. The Vikings were outgained by 180 total yards, yet still won by 17 points — the first win in franchise history by 15 or more points while being outgained by 150 or more yards.

“It wouldn’t be a Vikings win without coming back and having a little bit of adversity.”

That line fit the night. It also fits the question now hanging over the quarterback room.

If Wentz’s performance had simply steadied the team after Murray’s injury, the conversation would have ended there. Instead, the combination of Murray’s concussion, Wentz’s production, and the way Minnesota handled the Packers has created an immediate decision point. The next game against the Chicago Bears now carries real weight: if Wentz starts again and the Vikings win, the QB1 job could become his to lose. If Minnesota loses, the quarterback controversy is expected to fade, and Murray could be back in position to reclaim the starting role if he clears concussion protocol.

That is the tension Minnesota now has to manage. Murray left early after a concussion-causing hit. Wentz stepped in and produced four scoring drives in a row. And now the Vikings are left sorting out whether that was a one-game rescue or the start of a much harder quarterback discussion.
