Tre'Davious White is back in Buffalo, but not yet back in the lineup.
The Bills signed the veteran cornerback to their practice squad, a move that keeps the reunion low-commitment for now while White acclimates before joining the active roster. To make room, Buffalo released cornerback A.J. Woods.
That structure says as much about the moment as the name on the transaction. White is returning for his third stint with the Bills, and the team is choosing a path that lets him re-enter the building without immediately handing him a game-day role.
As ESPN’s Adam Schefter put it: “Just one day after their win out west, the Bills are bringing back a familiar face in cornerback Tre’Davious White, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.”
White’s history in Buffalo is substantial. The Bills drafted him in the first round in 2017, and he has 19 interceptions and 78 passes defensed in a Bills uniform. His best season in Buffalo came in 2019, when he had six interceptions and 17 passes defensed. He also earned Pro Bowl honors in 2019 and 2020, and second-team All-Pro recognition in 2020.
But the current move is built around patience, not projection. White will get acclimated before coming up to the active roster, and the Bills are not treating this as an immediate announcement of a starting job. That matters because White’s recent usage shows he can still handle a larger workload: last season he started 16 regular-season games and two playoff games, finishing with 10 passes defensed, one interception and 40 tackles.
This season marks White’s ninth year with the Bills and his tenth in the league, a reminder of how long his career has already stretched across different versions of Buffalo’s defense. The Bills also described him as a veteran presence for a young cornerbacks room, which gives the signing a second layer beyond the roster math.
For now, though, the transaction leaves the central question unresolved. White is back, A.J. Woods is out, and Buffalo has chosen a practice-squad path that keeps his next step open.
