Alfred Collins was ruled out for Thursday night’s game against the Rams, but the bigger news came with the diagnosis: a torn patellar tendon that Kyle Shanahan said will end the defensive tackle’s 2026 season.
That turns what began as a standard injury-report update into an immediate depth problem for San Francisco. The 49ers are already expected to lean on practice squad options against Los Angeles, and Collins’ absence leaves them trying to patch together the interior of the defensive line on short notice.
Shanahan announced Wednesday that Collins suffered the injury during Tuesday’s practice. The 49ers also confirmed the knee issue on their official injury report, listing him out for the matchup with the Rams.
James Thompson Jr. adds another layer of uncertainty. He is listed as questionable after dealing with a hamstring issue, and his practice week reflected that uncertainty: he did not participate on Tuesday before returning in a limited capacity on Wednesday and Thursday.
If Thompson can’t go, the 49ers’ options get even thinner for a short-week game. That is where the roster conversation starts to widen beyond one player’s availability and into how much San Francisco can ask from the group it already has in place.
One possible internal answer is Jordan Elliot, who has spent the last two seasons with the 49ers. He was described as a serviceable player over that stretch, but he did not record a sack. The other recent reference point is Maliek Collins, who started all 17 games in 2024 and finished with six sacks.
The contrast is hard to miss: one veteran with a full-season workload and production, another with familiarity but no sack total, and now a season-ending injury to Alfred Collins before the 49ers even get to Thursday night.
That is why the injury has already prompted outside speculation. A separate analysis suggested general manager John Lynch should be working the phones and noted that he seemed open to a trade when asked about the possibility. In other words, the Collins injury is being treated not just as a one-game absence, but as a possible trigger for roster movement.
The timing matters, too. San Francisco is set to open the 2026 season at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the NFL’s first-ever regular season game in Australia. For a team preparing for that stage, the current injury report is a reminder that availability can reshape roster construction long before the season opener arrives.
For now, the immediate question is narrower: can the 49ers get through the Rams game with the pieces they have? Collins is out, Thompson is questionable, and the defensive line is suddenly a short-term problem with longer-term implications.
