Luka Dončić is no longer just the player the Lakers are building around. This summer, he became part of the building process itself.

Dončić acknowledged having input into Los Angeles’ roster construction, a notable shift for a player who is now being treated as the face of the franchise after LeBron James’ departure. He also said he and general manager Rob Pelinka held each other accountable during those roster discussions, a detail that makes the relationship sound less like a star being consulted and more like a star helping shape the direction of the team.

That influence showed up in the Lakers’ offseason moves. The front office brought in Ziaire Williams and Matisse Thybulle, and traded for center Walker Kessler, a big, rim-running option meant to fit Dončić’s style. Austin Reaves was also brought back as part of the roster changes. The result is a group that looks very different from last season’s rotation, with many of those players no longer around.

Dončić has been quick to praise the new additions. After seeing Williams and Thybulle, he said, “It felt great. I think we all had fun out there, especially Matisse and Ziaire.” He also called their play “inspirational” and said of their defense, “the way they play defense using their hands, it’s one of the best that I’ve seen.”

That matters because the Lakers’ defensive identity this season may hinge in part on those two wings. Williams and Thybulle were two of the nine different Lakers to record a steal against Sacramento, and if Los Angeles is going to become a formidable defensive unit, they will need that kind of activity to carry over.

The bigger question is how Dončić is handling the role that comes with all of this. He is now the player entrusted with leading the franchise, but he has pushed back on the idea that the responsibility feels heavier.

“I mean, obviously they’re gonna say it’s a lot more pressure, but it’s not really pressure, it’s an honor,” Dončić said.

That line captures the tension around the Lakers’ next phase. Dončić is clearly involved in the roster’s shape, and the team has made moves that fit around him. At the same time, he is resisting the usual language that comes with being the face of the Lakers. For now, he is embracing the influence without publicly framing it as a burden.
